Introduction.
In the wardrobe of the average student, a boy or a girl, you can find at least eight things hanging in the closet: jeans, a cap, a jacket , a skirt, a shirt, sneakers, and T-shirts, of course . More often, the ornaments in the form of various inscriptions can be seen on them. Do the owners of the things think about the meaning of these inscriptions on their clothes, especially if they are written in the English language? Our study is aimed to find an answer to this question.
The object of study is the inscription in English on clothes of pupils, and sometimes teachers of our school.
The subject of our work is to study the information given by the inscriptions on clothes.
The purpose is to establish whether the semantic load of the inscription on clothes depends on the level of English proficiency of its owner. To achieve this goal it was necessary to solve several problems:
• Choose a certain number of inscriptions on clothing of students.
• Translate into Russian the meaning of the inscriptions.
• Identify the age, and the main reasons for buying these things.
• Summarize the data and come to a definite conclusion.
The work was done stage by stage:
• The preparatory stage was to gather information.
• In the second stage we analyzed the meanings and compared the collected inscriptions from different points of view.
• In the third final stage we made conclusions and drew the results.
We used two methods, searching and analytical.
This work will be useful and interesting as it will allow the students to pay attention to the translation of the inscriptions and to use the information correctly, because it should reflect the real interests of its owner.
Chapter 1. The history of the inscriptions
Inscriptions on clothes existed many centuries ago. And the earliest of them were in ancient Greece. We find embroidery on the belts, which tell us the names of the owners. Sometimes we can see the names on the jewelry. Very often the inscriptions were the part of the ornament and it was the fashion. As for the modern inscriptions, at first they decorated only the uniform of workers, indicating their status. Then they began to show the name of a designer or a company and after that the inscriptions appeared, which actually made sense. We don't know who invented them.
The inscriptions can be very different. They can tell us a lot about a person, in particular about the age, the interests of the owner. They can express the attitude to the world. Inscriptions can tell about the level of English proficiency, but more often people do not always understand what is written on their clothes.
Inscriptions vary with the age of the person. The child has just some funny phrases , the teenager can have all sorts of phrases, beginning with what this man is like , and finishing with the number of the team or the name of the street.
Now, the indispensable attribute of youth wardrobe is a T-shirt. In the wardrobe of any person you can find some of them with the inscriptions in English. T-shirts with funny slogans are especially popular among young people. Everyone chooses them according to his character and worldview. "Subject" T-shirts are becoming more and more popular. All the inscriptions can be divided into several groups of themes: romance, sports, creed or life position , music, cities, designers, ecology, religion. The separate group is a group of inscriptions with grammar mistakes and obscene meaning.
What do people want to say when they wear clothes with any inscriptions? "Nothing, just fun!" - they could say. But a T- shirt since its inception has been considered like "a talking thing". There are even cultural researches that a T-shirt is a "clean slate" for slogans and statements and a place for demonstration of the attitude . As you can see, the society uses this privilege successfully.
Chapter 2. Imitation or craze.
It's needless to say, now it is fashionable to stand out from the crowd! Being ordinary is no longer interesting. What do you “ write” on your clothes? And are your clothes " talking"? A lot of variants! Creativity knows no bounds! From the loud screaming banalities such as «Rich», «Hero», «Follow me», «Kiss me» ad «I love NY» to the profound expressions of the thinkers reworked with a modern twist.
Chapter 3. We are responsible for what is written on our clothes.
When children are little, parents do their children's wardrobe . At this age, kids usually do not worry about what they wear. However, the older they get, the more attention they pay to their appearance. Their friends and classmates judge them by their clothes at school. Besides, youth fashion has its trends and rules. If the message on the T- shirt reflects the sphere of interests of its owner - it's all right.
Generally, the inscriptions on clothes should be treated cautiously. Surrounding people often perceive them as the words spoken out by the host of the fashionable clothes and that is natural. Otherwise the question is if you do not support the words written on your clothes, why are you wearing them? So, paraphrasing the famous phrase, we can say - we are responsible for what is written on our clothes . Now let us consider the examples of the inscriptions of pupils T-shirts of our school.
Chapter 4. The practical part.
The study of the inscriptions on clothes of pupils has been held in the following way:
1. We have found pupils dressed in T-shirts with the inscriptions in English.
2. We have copied or taken pictures of the most interesting inscriptions and asked questions:
• age
• if he/she knows the meaning of the words written on the clothes
• translation of the text
• reason of buying the thing
• information about possible mistakes in the inscriptions
We have recorded and analyzed the responses of about 100 students which could be reflected graphically in the following table. The results of the survey we have divided into groups:

Summing up the results, it can be concluded that most students of our school have the T-shirts with the inscriptions in English. Only about 65% of students know the translation of the inscription on their clothes, they also noted that they pay attention to it when they buy things. The remaining 35% could not translate their inscriptions. The study revealed some inscriptions with grammatical and spelling mistakes. There are some inscriptions which present a random set of letters. These inscriptions has no meaning at all.
Our study was able to bring the problem to the surface and to suggest young people that they should think twice before buying another trendy thing with the unclear text. 33% of teenagers say that difficulties with the translation do not stop them from buying clothes they like and they do not pay attention to the translation of text and perceive it only as a decoration of clothes. Our research shows the extremely urgent and important fact that we are responsible for the information that we bear on ourselves. We, in a sense, associate ourselves with it. And it is thoughtlessly to hope that everybody does not know the foreign language and does not understand what is written on your clothes.
We must not forget that judge not of men and things at first sight .
Conclusion.
Thus, answering the question in the introduction whether young people pay attention to the meaning of the inscription in English on their clothes, we have found that only 65% of the surveyed students do it. Pupils noted that the difficulties with the translation do not stop them from buying clothes they like. 35% of students don't pay attention to the translation of text and perceive it as a decoration of clothes.
The level of English, which is determined by the age of the respondent students allows them to understand the inscriptions and to use the written information correctly.
