I ntroduction
New York — a city in the State of New York of the United States of America, the largest in the USA and one of the largest cities of the world (17 place). The population of 8 459 026 persons (2010), with suburbs — 18, 8 million. Is located on the bank of Atlantic ocean in a southeast part of the State of New York. New York has been based in the XVII-th century beginning by the Dutch colonists. Till 1664 the city was called «New Amsterdam».
H istory
New York, founded in 1626, for a long time was called New Amsterdam, having his name on the will of the German Peter Minnevita in the service in the Dutch court. In 1664, the city was captured by British colonists, who awarded him the modern name of New York associated with the English Duke of York.
In 1817-1825 the city was built Erie Canal, which became one of the major U.S. highways, which also played a positive role in increasing the economic importance of New York.
Since 30-ies of the XIX century, there is the New York Stock Exchange, which is responsible for the economic situation not only in the U.S., but around the world. By 1870 through New York harbor passes 70% of all imports and 50% of exports of America.
The city administratively consists of 5 areas : Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten-Island.
C limate
City climate damp, is moderate-continental. Deposits are distributed rather in regular intervals within a year. Mid-annual quantity of hours of solar light — 2680 hours. In spite of the fact that the city is at ocean coast, a difference in temperature between summer and in the winter big enough, as prevailing movement of air weights — from continent.
Ocean influence is minor, but nevertheless softens fluctuations of temperatures a little. One more factor is dense city building which does a city slightly more warmly, than vicinities.
R eligion
Representatives of almost all religions and religious sects of the world live in a city. Christians and followers of a Judaism numerically dominate. In New York there are cult constructions of all basic religions, including more than hundred mosques.
Municipal transportation

New York has the developed network of bus routes which daily transports more than 2 million passengers. The bus network of New York includes more than 200 local and 30 high-speed routes on which works more than 5900 buses.
Each route has number and the alphabetic prefix designating area which it serves (buses ply exclusively on the area) (B — Brooklyn, Bx — Bronx, M — Manhattan, Q — Queens, S — Staten-Island), and high-speed routes are designated by a prefix X.

U nderground
The underground of New York includes 486 stations on 26 routes and is the most extended in the world, having length 1355 km. It is remarkable that 40 % of ways and third of stations are on a surface and are located at ground level or on platforms.
