Theme: Disasters. TSUNAMI
Aim: to develop basic reading skills – skimming and scanning
Objectives:
to revise Past Simple Passive
to activate the DISASTERS vocabulary
to read the text applying skimming and scanning techniques
to encourage students to speak on the topic
Outcomes: by the end of the lesson students will expand their “Disasters vocabulary” and improve their reading skills
Equipment: IT board, whiteboard, handouts, Student’s Books, Work Books
Procedure

2. Speaking activity (B-s read their questions)
p. 122 SB
3. Pre-Reading (Activating schemata – predicting the content of the text)
The Teacher gives each student a card with a letter from A to E (Handout 1)
Then all the students close their eyes. Only A-s open their eyes. The Teacher shows them the word “WAVE”. Then only B-s open their eyes – “JAPAN”. C-s – “The Pacific ocean”. D – “EARTHQUAKE”. “E” - “30”. (Handout 2) Then the Ss are split into 2 groups with A-E in each group.
They discuss what the text might be about. the teacher goes around and monitors, meanwhile providing them with some extra words: natural disaster, dangerous, coast, to protect
4. 1st reading (skim reading for general information)
Ss read the text for the first time and discuss whether their predictions were correct. Then they answer the Qs in ex. 5a, p. 64 (SB) T-Class
5. 2nd reading (scanning for specific information)
Ss read the text for the second time and do ex-s 5b, 5c and 5d, p.64 (SB)

6. Activity for students on the topic “Tsunami” (to prepare a news report using the information from the text and vocabulary they have already learned)
Situation: You are working for a TV channel as news reporters. The giant wave – tsunami – covered and destroyed a small town. You have to prepare a short news report about this situation using the information from the text you have read and the words: tsunami, earthquake, destroy, injured, protect, damage, enormous, destruction and any other word from your vocabularies on the topic “DISASTERS”. (Handout 3)
