Test 4.

Task 1. Read the text and complete the statements after it

Why Japan Is Cool

Each year more and more people get interested in Japan and visit it. Japan is a country with longstanding traditions and ancient culture.

Japan's name means "origin of the sun" -which is often translated as Land of the Rising Sun. The term appeared due to Japan's location to the east of the ancient empire of China. The country is situated to the east from the Asian continent and is surrounded, by the ocean from different directions. It consists of many mountainous islands with active volcanoes. Of the four main islands, Honshu is the largest. The islands constitute 95% of Japan's total territory while the remaining part is occupied by more than 3,000 smaller islands. The total land area of Japan is 374,744 square kilometres. All of these islands are likely to suffer from earthquakes.

After a long but comfortable flight the plane lands at the airport of Tokyo. Tokyo is a city tied to the future as it is to the past. As the modern-day capital of Japan it is the national centre of government, education and finance, and home to 12 million residents. Museums and restaurants, shopping centres and modern concert halls — you can find it all beneath the neon lights of this pulsating modern metropolis. It is also an ultra-urban city. Here you can find cutting-edge or innovative and pioneering fashion, a lot of experimental music, the latest gadgets from minicomputers that you can easily put into your pocket to super hi-tech mobile phones with digital cameras. Вариант 2

1. Чтение

Установите соответствие между заголовками А-Н и текстами 1—7. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

  1. UNUSUAL RELATIONSHIPS

  2. SIMILAR CHARACTERISTICS

  3. DIFFICULT PERIODS

  4. TWO TYPES

  5. IMPORTANT MOMENTS

  6. MISTAKEN BELIEFS

  7. MANY RESPONSIBILITIES

  8. HOME ALONE

1. In Britain, most families are ‘nuclear families’. This means that the family consists of the parents and children. Of course, there are uncles and aunts and grandparents too, but they do not have much to do with raising the children and often live a long way away. In many other countries, the extended family’ is more common. With the extended family, uncles, aunts and grandparents live much closer to the parents and children — sometimes even in the same building — and everyone in the family has a much closer relationship.

2. Most teenagers say at some point: ‘When I’m a parent, I’m going to give my children much more freedom than I have now.’ When they do actually become parents however, they soon realise that giving a child or teenager lots of freedom is not always the best thing to do. Many parents end up hearing their children saying to them exactly the same things they said to their parents when they were young.

3. What does bringing up a child involve? Giving a child love and making a child feel safe in their environment are extremely important. So is providing food and warmth. Parents also have a duty to teach their children the difference between right and wrong, and to make sure their children get a good education. Some parents believe that their role is also to teach children about the importance of things such as family, religion and society.

4. The English phrases ‘a chip off the old block’ and like father, like son’ (or ‘like mother, like daughter’) are used to show the similarities between a parent and their child. These might be similarities in terms of appearance, behaviour or interests. For example, if a dad loves watching cricket and his son Eric becomes interested in cricket too, you might say, ‘Eric’s a chip off the old block, isn’t he?’

5. ‘Latchkey kids’ are a major problem in many countries, including Britain and the USA. These are children whose parents are still at work when they come home from school, so there is no one at home to look after them. Their parents aren’t there to help them with their homework, and some of them spend hours on their own before their parents return.

6. The idea of’quality time’ is based on an understanding that the amount of time a parent spends with their child is not the only important thing. What is also important is what they do together during that time. Ten minutes of discussing problems that a teenager is facing may be much more valuable than two hours of watching a movie together in silence.

7. Families work well when things are going well, but the real test of a family comes at times of stress. Perhaps Mum has been working too hard, or perhaps young Amy is taking exams at school. These are times when all families can find themselves fighting instead of helping each other. When a family is going through a crisis like this, it can often help to talk to someone outside the family. It could either be an expert, such as a family counsellor, or a trusted family friend.

A. He was very sad and went to the airline. They felt very sorry for poor Peter and found him a seat on the evening flight. Peter went home by taxi to wait for the evening.

B. Peter left the house at 10 o’clock in the morning and took a taxi to the airport. When he arrived and got out of the car, he decided to find his passport. Peter opened his bag but the passport wasn’t there. He became very unhappy! “What am I going to do!” he thought.

C. Yesterday Peter woke up early. He was feeling very happy. Finally it was the day of his trip to Russia. It was his childhood dream to visit this large and unusual country. His grandfather was Russian and he often told him Russian fairy tales about kind people, powerful kings and queens and wild animals.

D. Peter jumped up and down angrily. “Where is the taxi? Where is it!” he was crying. He ran down the street and looked for another taxi. After a few minutes, Peter found another taxi and told the driver to take him to the airport quickly. There were a lot of cars on the roads and Peter’s taxi arrived at the airport late. His plane left for Moscow at 11.30 and Peter missed it.

E. He jumped back into the taxi and asked the driver to take him home. They drove quickly and it took Peter twenty minutes to get back home. He ran into the house and went to his bedroom. He found his passport on the table and left the house again. But the taxi wasn’t there! Where was the taxi?!

  1. READING.

Read the text and choose the right item in the sentences after it.

The New Zealand Kiwi

This strange bird is New Zealand's national symbol. Everywhere in the world, Kiwi is New Zealand, or a New Zealander. New Zealanders also like to call themselves Kiwis.

The Kiwi (bird) got its name after its shrill call - "kee-wee kee-wee". It can't see well, and although it has wings, it cannot fly. Kiwis live in forests or wet places and feed on insects, worms, snails, and berries. It is unusual in at least two things. First, it is the only bird in the world that has its nostrils1 at the end of its long beak to find food and sense danger. Second, the female kiwi has the largest egg, in proportion to its body size. Kiwis are as big as chickens, but their eggs are almost as big as those of ostriches! There are several species of kiwi spread over the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

The kiwi looks very much like kiwifruit - the brown furry fruit with the green flesh. Kiwifruit comes originally from China, and in fact its original name was Chinese gooseberry2. Sometime in the 1960s, the kiwifruit farmers in New Zealand decided to market the fruit overseas, but decided to give them another name. To help identify the fruit with New Zealand, they chose the name kiwifruit. Some people call kiwifruit kiwis, but this is incorrect. New Zealanders especially find this very wrong! A kiwi is a bird or a human New Zealander; but the fruit has different names - kiwifruit or Chinese gooseberry.

While it's not easy to see the real kiwi bird, the kiwi as a symbol is everywhere: on stamps and coins, on all sorts of products, in the toy shops, on flags, everywhere, all over the world.
