On its Eve offices and public buildings close at one o'clock, but the shops stay open late. Most high cities especially London, are decorated with colored lights across the streets and trees. This festival has its origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, observed on February 15. Lupercalia celebrated the coming of spring in the Roman calendar. Now, it is the day of all sweethearts. On this day, people send presents or flowers to those whom they love.
On this holiday children wear costumes and masks and go trick-or-treating. Many of them carve jack-o'-lantens out of pumpkins. Fortunetelling and storytelling about ghosts and witches are popular activities.
