There are different kinds of animals and birds and they all have different qualities. For example: the fox is cunning, the leopard is fast. There are a lot of phrases about animals.

There are more than 100 kinds of animals and over 270 kinds of birds in the Altai Territory.

In the Red Book of Russia you can find 4 kinds of animals and over 30 kinds of birds, living in Altai.

In the Red Book of the Altai Territory there are 171 species.

Altai is very beautiful.

The beauty of Altai is in its nature.

In the fields, forests and mountains

there are a lot of different animals.

There are endless green fields in Altai.

In the fields and steppes you can find:

a marmot

a hare

a ground squirrel

a wolf

There are a lot of forests in Altai. In the forests you can meet:

a bear

a squirrel

a deer

a lynx

Forest is the home for such kinds of birds as:

a cuckoo

a crossbill

an owl

a wood-grouse

Swift are the Altai rivers and beautiful are its lakes. Near lakes and rivers you can see:

a beaver

an otter

a musk-rat

a raccoon

Many kinds of birds live there too:

ducks

a goose

a gull

a crane

The Altai Mountains are very attractive.

In the mountains you can meet:

a snow leopard

a wild ram

a kite

griffons

An otter can drink a sea water.

A squirrel can eat birds and mice.

A woodpecker has a short tongue.

A flamingo can eat snails.

Roedeers live in herds in summer.

A deer can have many wives.

A lynx jumps on its victim from the tree.

The TV programme “The Animal’s World” is looking for the best story about animals!

1. A snow leopard.

A snow leopard is a wild animal. It lives in the mountains. It’s a very beautiful animal with a long tail. It has a grey skin with light yellow spots. A leopard is brave and fast. It hunts small animals. It’s an endangered animal. There are only 15 snow leopards left in Altai.

2. A lynx.

A lynx is a wild animal. It lives in the forest. It’s big and strong. A lynx has wonderful brushes on its ears. It hunts different animals. It can run and jump very well.

3. A squirrel.

A squirrel is a wild animal. It lives in the forest. It’s a beautiful animal with a fluffy tail. A squirrel can jump well. It is small and kind. It likes mushrooms and nuts.

4. A woodpecker.

A woodpecker is a wild bird. It lives in the forest. The bird is small. It has a long nose. It likes insects. It helps trees. It can fly well.

5. A marmot.

A marmot is a wild animal. It lives in the field. The animal is brown with a fluffy fur. It is not big and fat. It eats corn. It sleeps in winter.

6. An elk.

An elk is a wild animal. It lives in the forest. It is big and beautiful. The animal is brown with wonderful horns. It can run very well. It likes bark.

7. A bear.

A bear is a wild animal. It lives in the forest. The animal is big and brown. It’s strong and brave. It can swim and climb the tress very well. A bear likes fish and honey.

8. A fox.

A fox is a wild animal. It lives in the steppes and forests. A fox is very beautiful. It is red with a fluffy tail. The animal is cunning and intelligent. It can run very well. It eats mice.

Many animals and birds, living in Altai, are disappearing nowadays. Many of them are in danger.

People have hunted and killed many martens, sables and foxes for their beautiful skin.

Musk-deers and marals are killed for their meat.

People have cut down many trees in the forests and squirrels, elks wild boars have no place to live.

They all are endangered animals.

Remember the names of Endangered Animals:

• a sea eagle

• a wild boar
