Good morning, students. Sit down please. Let us begin our lesson. I’d like to start our lesson today with watching a video. I am sure you’ll understand our topic for today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkjwxmcdb0E (Nature is speaking)
Environmental problems”)
T: You are right. We are going to talk about Environment. What words do you remember connected with nature?
And I’d like you to read a poem about our Mother Earth
The land is in a constant state of birth,
Giving life to all who live on Earth.
Our carelessness and fears
Have taken a toll over the years.
Her land is parched and scorched
As man continues to light the torch.
We continue a want of speed and ease,
All while our pesticides kill off our bees.
It's time to wake up and see Mother Earth's pain.
Humanity's selfishness is becoming insane.
Soon her cries will turn to gloom,
And man will cause its own doom.
T Do you know the English equivalents of these Russian expressions?
Now you will watch a video. While watching it, try to write out words, connected with the topic of our lesson: what problems we face and what can we do to solve them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvBsgfn_cvY
Problems | Solutions |
A pandemic | To master social distance |
Lockdowns | To protect the natural habitats |
Separated and devastated потрясенные families | To keep our planet’s temperature in check |
Deforestation | To raise awareness |
Over-exploitation | To use low-energy electrical items |
Over-production | |
Over-consumption | |
Illegal consumption | |
Clearing the land for agriculture and livestock | |
| |
As it was said in the video A little effort goes a long way. That means any little step can make the biggest difference. What personally you do every day to be friendlier to the environment. д.)
Have you ever heard about Earth hour? Have you ever taken part in this event? No?
We’ll read the text about it and discuss it.
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is an annual global campaign that encourages people and businesses around the world to switch off electricity at the same time for one hour. Earth Hour started in Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million people in the city of Sydney turned off all non-essential lights for an hour. Since then it has grown to a massive global event. In 2013, millions of people in 7,000 cities and towns around the world switched off their lights for 60 minutes at the end of March. Every year landmarks and well-known buildings around the world such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, the Petronas towers in Malaysia, the UK Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the Empire State Building take part and ‘go dark’ for Earth Hour. The campaign even went into space when astronauts reduced power on the International Space Station in 2011.
Who organises Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It was started by Andy Ridley, originally from Britain, who is executive director of Earth Hour Global, WWF. He came up with the idea of Earth Hour because he wanted to raise awareness of environmental issues by asking people to do something positive to help the planet. Switching off the lights for an hour can make a small difference to the amount of energy we use but Earth Hour is also a symbolic event to make people think about the problems of climate change.
Why March?
The end of March is around the time of the spring and autumn equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively, so sunset times in both hemispheres are at similar times. This means that a global ‘lights out’ event has most visual impact at this time of year.

Millions of buildings around the globe will be dark for an hour on Saturday, March 28 as the third Earth Hour takes place. The event is organized by the World Wildlife Fund. It started in 2007 as a way of drawing attention to the dangers of climate change. The Earth Hour website says: “For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming.” Organizers hope their message will reach a billion people. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Earth Hour promises to be “the largest demonstration of public concern about climate change ever attempted”.
Not everyone agrees that Earth Hour will help. Many see it as being too little, too late and that not much will change when the lights are switched back on. Climate campaigner Clive Hamilton says: "We are well past the time for feel-good exercises aimed at raising awareness… It's like the band playing on as the Titanic sinks.” He says the event is risky because the next morning people will think the climate has recovered a little. "Symbolism is powerful if it leads to action, but dangerous if it substitutes for it," he says. Environmentalist Mark Alexander-Warne agrees. He stresses the need to reduce our daily energy consumption, rather than simply “sitting around in the dark” for an hour.
