Wolf, Robin and Dove are talking in the forest

1

Wolf

Ugh! This is perfectly monstrous weather. Why doesn’t the government look to it?

1

Robin

(after Wolf)

Weet! Weet! The old earth is dead, and they have laid her out in her white shroud.

Dove

(after Robin)

The earth is going to be married, and this is her bridal dress.

2

Wolf

(after Dove)

Nonsense! I tell you that it is all the fault of the government, and if you don’t believe me I shall eat you.

Two woodcutters come to the forest

1

Woodcutter 1

(after Wolf)

Why do we make merry, when life is for the rich, and not for the poor as we? Better we had died of cold in the forest, or that some wild beast had eaten us.

1

Woodcutter 2

(after Woodcutter 1)

Truly, much is given to some and little is given to others.

2

Woodcutter 1

(after Woodcutter 2)

Why! What is it?

Woodcutter 2

(after Woodcutter 1)

There is a crock of gold for whoever finds it!

3

Woodcutter 1

(after Woodcutter 2)

I have found a treasure!

Unwrapping the parcel they see a child

2

Woodcutter 2

(after Woodcutter 1)

This is a bitter ending to our hope! Let us leave it here and go our way! We are poor men and have children of our own whose bread we may not give to another.

4

Woodcutter 1

(after Woodcutter 2)

No, it is an evil thing to leave the child to die here in the snow. I am as poor as you are and have many mouths to feed, yet, I’ll bring it home, and my wife will take care of it.

Woodcutter comes home and gives the child to his wife

5

Woodcutter 1

(after Woodcutter 1)

I have found something in the forest and brought it to you to take care of it.

1

Wife

(after Woodcutter 1)

What is it? Show what you’ve got!

Oh, dear! Have we not children enough of our own? And who knows if it will bring us bad fortune? And how shall we tend it?

6

Woodcutter 1

(after Wife)

He is a star-child! I have found it in the wood, lying in the snow.

2

Wife

(after Woodcutter 1)

Our children don’t have enough bread and shall we feed the child of another? Who cares for us? And who gives us food?

7

Woodcutter 1

(after Wife)

God cares for the sparrows even and feeds them.

3

Wife

(after Woodcutter 1)

Don’t the sparrows die of hunger in the winter? And is it not winter now? Close the door, there comes a bitter wind and I am cold.

Some years passed and the children are playing outdoors

1

Star-child

(after Wife)

Hey! Where are you? Don’t you see that I am waiting for you?

1

Step-brother

(after Star-child)

Here we are! Excuse us please!

1

Step-sister

(after Step-brother)

Why are you shouting at us? We are not your servants!

2

Star-child

(after Step-sister)

Yes, you are! Just look at yourselves! Your skin is dark and your hair is grey like that of a mouse. And look at me, my skin is white like a lily’s petal and my hair shines like gold! I am the son of the star and you are only poor peasants! And I can play and sing beautifully and you have no talents at all, so, of course, you are my servants and you must obey me!

2

Step-sister

(after Star-child)

What are you doing? The animals are our brothers and sisters! You mustn’t do them any harm! They live not for your pleasure! God made the blind worm and the mole and each has its place. Who are you to bring pain into God’s world?

Suddenly they notice a beggar

3

Star-child

(after Step-sister)

Look! There is an ugly beggar-woman under the tree. Come, let us drive her hence. She is so ugly!

9

Woodcutter 1

(after Star-child)

Stop it at once! Surely, you know no mercy! What has this poor woman done to you that you should treat her this way?

4

Star-child

(after Woodcutter 1)

Who are you to question me? I am not your son!

10

Woodcutter 1

(after Star-child)

You are right! Yet, didn’t I show you pity when I found you in the forest?

1

Beggar-woman

(after Woodcutter 1)

Did you say that the child was found in the forest? And was it not ten years from this day?

11

Woodcutter 1

(after Beggar-woman)

Yes, I found him in the forest ten years ago.

2

Beggar-woman

(after Woodcutter 1)

And what signs did you find with him? Was there a chain of amber upon his neck? Was not round him a cloak of gold tissue broidered with stars?

12

Woodcutter 1

(after Beggar-woman)

Truly, it was even as you said.

3

Beggar-woman

(after Woodcutter 1)

Oh! He is my little son, whom I lost in the forest. I pray you, send for him quickly for in search of him I have wandered all over the world.

4

Wife

(after Beggar-woman)

Go into the house and there you will find the mother, who is waiting for you.

5

Star-child

(after Wife)

Why, where is my mother? For I see none here but this ugly beggar-woman.

4

Beggar-woman

(after Star-child)

I am your mother!

6

Star-child

(after Beggar-woman)

You are mad to say so! I am not your son, for you are an ugly beggar in rags! Get out of here and let me see your ugly face no more!

5

Beggar-woman

(after Star-child)

But you are indeed my little son whom I bore in the forest. The robbers stole you from me and left you to die, but I recognized you and the signs. I have recognized the cloak of golden tissue and the amber chain. I pray come with me for I have wandered over the whole world in search of you. Come with me my son I need your love!

7

Star-child

(after Beggar-woman)

If you are really my mother it had been better you’d stayed away and not come here to bring me to shame. I thought I was the child of some star. Not a beggar’s child as you told me. Therefore get out and let me see you no more!

6

Beggar-woman

(after Star-child)

Alas! My son, will you not kiss me before I go. I have suffered much to find you.

8

Star-child

(after Beggar-woman)

No you are too ugly to look at and rather I would kiss the toad than you.

The star-child turns into an ugly dwarf

1

Boys

(after Star-child)

You are as ugly as the toad!

Get out. We will not suffer you to play with us!

1

Star-child

(after Boys)

Surely it has happened to me by reason of my sin. I have denied my mother being cruel to her. I will go and seek her through the whole world. No will I rest till I have found her.

3

Step-sister

(after Star-child)

What does it matter if you have lost your beauty? Stay with us and I will not mock at you.

2

Star-child

(after Step-sister)

No I have been cruel to my mother and was turned into this ugly thing. I must go and wander through the world till I find her and she’ll give me forgiveness.

3

Star-child

(after Star-child)

You can go beneath the earth. Tell me, is my mother there?

1

Mole

(after Star-child)

You have blinded my eyes how should I know?

4

Star-child

(after Mole)

You can fly over the tops of the tall trees and can see the world. Tell me can I see my mother?

2

Robin

(after Star-child)

You have dipped my wings for your pleasure. How should I fly?

5

Star-child

(after Robin)

Where is m y mother?

1

Squirrel

(after Star-child)

You have killed my mother. Do you seek to kill yours also?

6

Star-child

(after Squirrel)

Forgive me please, if you can. I beg you.

The scene near the city gates

1

Wardens

(after Star-child)

What is your business in the city?

7

Star-child

(after Wardens)

I am seeking for my mother and I pray you to let me pass. May be she is in the city.

2

1st warden

(after Star-child)

Of a truth, your mother will not be merry when she sees you for you are uglier than the toad. Get out, your mother is not in this city!

2

2nd warden

(after1st warden)

Who is your mother and wherefore are you seeking for her?

8

Star-child

(after2nd warden)

My mother is a beggar even as I am and I have treated her badly. I pray you – let me pass, she may give me her forgiveness.

3

1st warden

(after Star-child)

Get out! We won’t let you pass.

3

2nd warden

(after1st warden)

Listen! We can sell this ugly thing and his price will be the price of a bowl of sweet wine!

1

Wizard

(after2nd warden)

I will buy him for that price!

In a wood there are three pieces of gold. One of white gold, another is of yellow gold and the gold of the third one is red. Today you will bring me the piece of white gold and if you bring it not back I will beat you with hundred stripes. Get away quickly and at sunset I will be waiting for you.

9

Star-child

(after Wizard)

I am a slave myself, yet I may give you your freedom!

Hare

(after Star-child)

You have given me freedom, and what shall I give you in return?

10

Star-child

(after Hare)

I am seeking for a piece of white gold and I can’t find it anywhere. If I don’t bring it to my master he will beat me!

1

Hare

(after Star-child)

Come with me and I will lead you to it for I know where it is hidden!

1

Sick-man

(after Hare)

Give me a piece of money or I must die of hunger for they have thrust me out of the city and there is noone who has pity on me.

11

Star-child

(after Sick-man)

Alas! I have only one piece of money in my pocket and if I bring it not to my master he will beat me?

2

Wizard

(after Star-child)

Have you the piece of white gold?

Star-child

(after Wizard)

I have it not!

3

Wizard

(after Star-child)

If today you don’t bring me the piece of yellow gold, I will surely keep you as my slave and give three hundred stripes.

2

Hare

(after Wizard)

Why are you weeping? And what are you seeking in the wood?

12

Star-child

(after Hare)

I am seeking for a piece of yellow gold that is hidden here, and I find it not my master will beat me.

13

Star-child

(after Star-child)

How shall I thank you? This is the second time you help me!

3

Hare

(after Star-child)

No you had paid pity on me first!

2

Sick-man

(after Hare)

Give me a piece of money or I shall die of hunger.

14

Star-child

(after Sick-man)

I have only one piece of money in my pocket and if I bring it not to my master he will make me his slave!

4

Wizard

(after Star-child)

Have you the piece of white gold?

15

Star-child

(after Wizard)

I have it not!

4

Wizard

(after Star-child)

If today you bring me a piece of red gold I will set you free, but if you bring it not, I will kill you.

4

Hare

(after Wizard)

The piece of re gold that you are seeking is behind that tree! Therefore weep no more.

16

Star-child

(after Hare)

How shall I reward you? This is the third time you help me!

5

Hare

(after Star-child)

You had paid pity on me first!

3

Sick-man

(after Hare)

Give me a piece of money or I must die of hunger.

17

Star-child

(after Sick-man)

Your need is greater than mine!

4

1st warden

(after Star-child)

How beautiful is our Lord!

4

2nd warden

(after1st warden)

Surely, there is no one so beautiful in the whole world!

18

Star-child

(after2nd warden)

I am not King’s son, but the child of a poor beggar-woman, and how can I say to you that I am beautiful, for I know that I am evil to look at?

5

1st warden

(after Star-child)

How can my Lord say that he is not beautiful?

1

Mayor

(after1st warden)

You are our Lord for whom we have been waiting and the son of our King. Take this crown and be in justice and mercy over us!

19

Star-child

(after Mayor)

But I am not worthy, for I have not denied that mother who bare me, nor may I rest till I have found her and know her forgiveness! Let me go!

20

Star-child

(after Star-child)

Mother! I denied you in the hour of my pride! Accept me in the hour of my humility! I gave you hatred! Give me love! Receive your child now! Three times I gave my mercy. Beg my mother to speak to me once!

7

5

Beggar-woman Wizard

(after Star-child)

Rise! Rise!

1

King

(after Wizard)

This is your father whom you have saved!

1

Queen

(after King)

This is your mother whose feet you have washed with your tears!
