Snowflakes ( Snowdrops)

Scene I

Snowflakes dance.

( Song Snowflakes)

(Bear and Masha are in the house. Bear reads a newspaper. Masha looks out of the window at dancing

snowflakes. Then she sits down in the armchair, takes her tablet,

watches something and in a minute she starts sobbing.)

Bear:(to Masha) Why are you crying, little thing?

Masha: I’d like to have… just now… spring!

Get birthday presents, dance and sing,

Play games, eat tasty cakes and swing!

It’s so boring in winter here.

Let’s have my birthday party, Mishka, dear!

Bear: But spring comes after winter as a rule.

Masha: I’d like, I’d like, I’d like…Why are you so fool?

(Masha shows Bear the tablet)

Look! There’s a basket full of snowdrops, aren’t there?

And it is winter in the street, my silly Bear!

I’d like such flowers for my birthday, too.

Mishka, give me a basket of snowdrops, will you?

Bear: What a whimsical girl you are!

It’s just a fairy-tale. Will you eat a chocolate bar?

(Bear gives Masha a bar of chocolate)

Masha: A fairy-tale? I’d like, I’d like it too.

Bear: OK. I’ll watch the fairy-tale with you.

(They sit down with the tablet on the sofa)

Bear: Well, before I’d like to ask you, Masha

If you know all the months?

Masha: What a simple question, Mishka!

I can name them all at once.

Masha:(names the months) Well, January, February…… December

Bear: OK. But always remember

Months come one by one.

February never comes before January,

September never comes before August, bar none.

Masha: And I want April before January.

I’d like snowdrops very much.

Bear: It’s really impossible.

Wait for three months

Or just ninety days, as such.

(The Speaker appears on the stage)

Speaker: To tell the truth, there lived a girl

Who happened to see the months all together.

In the forest a fire they burn

Once a year and in any weather.

Masha:(to Bear) Who was the girl, what did she do?

Bear: A stepdaughter, she worked hard unlike you.

Masha: Wow! Mishka, let’s watch it quicker.

Bear: OK. Watch and listen to the speaker!

Scene II

(A country house. Stepmother lays the table for supper. Her daughter sits in front of the fireplace and displaces baskets. The stepdaughter knits)

Speaker: Somewhere in a village a greedy woman lived,

She had a dear daughter who liked to sleep and eat.

She never cleaned the house and never cooked the food,

The daughter like her mother was always very rude.

The daughter has a sister, not a full sister at all,

The girl was a stepdaughter but pretty like a doll.

In her stepmother’s house she worked till very night

She cooked, weeded the garden,

Brought wood and never cried.

The mother and the daughter called her a draggle-tail.

In winter, autumn, summer she’d no time to play.

(Stepmother turns to the stepdaughter )

Stepmother: Hey! A draggle-tail, put everything away,

Take a basket and to the forest make your way!

Tomorrow your sister will have her birthday

Bring a basket of snowdrops, I say.

Daughter: Here’s a basket for you

Pick up nice snowdrops

Many, not a few!

Stepdaughter: It’s terribly cold,

I can be frozen.

Daughter: I am not joking,

You’ve been chosen.

Stepdaughter: Let’s wait for spring.

And snowdrops will be ours.

Daughter: Stop talking!

And never come back without flowers! (pushes the stepdaughter out)

(Stepmother and Daughter dance)

«Valenki»

Scene III

(A snowy forest with a little clearing. There is a fire. The stepdaughter in a ragged shawl walks through the forest. She sings a song “Little Snowflake”)

Stepdaughter: The forest is scary and dark.

I can see nothing around

Nobody told me: “Good luck!”

And I haven’t even a hound.

(The stepdaughter looks around and notices a twinkling light)

Stepdaughter: Oh, there’s a light over there.

What can it be? I cannot dare.

(12 months around the fire sing a song “Twelve months in a year”)

December: Who are you? What brought you here?

Stepdaughter: I need a full basket of snowdrops

Or the punishment will be severe.

(The months exchange glances and smile)

January: Snowdrops in January?

Is it a joke, girl?

Stepdaughter: My stepmother is cruel,

Without them I can’t return.

February: What are you going to do

I’d like to hear from you.

Stepdaughter: I’ll stay in the forest and wait

Till in April flowers appear.

I won’t go back home,

I would rather freeze here.

(The girl sits down and cries. The months whisper with each other).

April: Brother January, I beg you

Let me take your place

I promise, in an hour

You just won’t see my trace.

January: Brother April, I don’t mind much

But April cannot come earlier than February and March.

February: Neither do I

Little girl, don’t cry!

March: As for me, I don’t mind

The girl is good and very kind.

We met her in the forest all year round,

She comes alone, without a hound.

September: Autumn months like her too

For hard work, kindness and cheerful mood.

March: We must help her, in my opinion.

January: So be it! Let’s continue.

Don’t bite us, hard frosts

In the forests and woods.

Don’t gnaw nice birch bark

And fir cones and needles.

Don’t freeze forest birds:

Crows, sparrows, ducks.

Don’t make houseroom

Very cold, chill and cool.

I yield my place without delay.

Brother February, now your turn. Hey!

(Brother January knocks three times to the ground)

(Brothers pass each other a staff and knock it to the ground. The last one is April)

February: Winter winds and snowstorms,

Blow with all your might!

Snowdrifts and blizzards

Spin towards night!

Blow loudly in the clouds,

Dance above the ground.

Like a white snake in the fields

Drift snow winds around.

(Brother February knocks three times)

Now, it’s up to you, Brother March.

Take the staff and keep in touch!

March: Snow’s darkened in the fields.

Ice is full of cracks.

The sky is very high and blue

Clouds float fast.

Sparrows began to tweet

On the roofs and trees.

Willows are wearing

Silver earrings.

(Brother March knocks three times)

March: Brother April, it’s your turn now

Knock 3 times and we will count!

April: (knocks three times)

Streams, run!

Puddles, spread!

Ants, get out!

Snow, melt!

After winter frosts

Birds, start singing songs!

Bears, make the way through wood!

Tender snowdrops, bloom!

( Snowdrops dance)

Stepdaughter: I can’t believe my eyes, Brother April.

It’s warm and sunny like in summer,

I can’t see snow anywhere

But there are snowdrops here and there.

April: Dear girl, be quick!

Take your basket and pick!

We’ve got only an hour

To slip off the flowers.

Stepdaughter: Snowdrops here, snowdrops there,

Snowdrops, snowdrops everywhere.

But I won’t pick them all,

Some of them are very small.(picks the flowers)

Thank you, thank you, brothers-months.

It’s time to go home and here’s the path. (walks away)

Scene IV

(A country house. Stepmother and her daughter sit in front of the fireplace and talk. Stepdaughter with flowers comes in)

Stepmother: Is it you, a draggle-tail?

Why are you so quick?

Daughter: She’s brought a basket of flowers

And isn’t even sick.

Stepmother: Tell us where you picked the flowers?

Daughter: I can’t believe they all are ours!

(Daughter takes the basket)

Stepmother: Come on, answer where you went!

Did they give you a present?

Stepdaughter: No, no! They gave me a cup of hot tea.

That was enough for me.

Daughter : A cup of hot tea?! My God!

How little brain you’ve got!

You could asked for apples, berries,

Mushrooms, apricots and cherries.

Stepmother: You are a clear head, my honey.

I know how to get much money.

Bundle up well and go to the wood,

Ask for an exotic in the winter food.

We’ll sell it for a lot of money

And become rich, my honey bunny.

Daughter: Mom, I’ve got a brilliant idea

For promoting our business career!

If we go together to the wood

We’ll bring twice as much food.

Scene V

(Bear and Masha are in the house. They watch the fairy-tale “12 months” on the tablet.)

Masha: Mishka, look here,

I’ve got an idea,

The place is familiar to me.

Bear: You’ve got an idea!? I see…

Masha: Let’s stop watching here

And go to the wood, it’s near.

There are some flowers left, aren’t there?

Do you listen to me? Or you don’t care!

( Masha stands up)

Bear: (sitting) Don’t hurry, a bustler!

We’ll be caught in the snow

If we just now go.

Masha: Silly bear, you can ski

But won’t forget about me.

Bear: Why don't you leave me alone?

I wish to stay at home.

( Masha stamps her feet)

Masha: Mishka, I can be offended.

You know, I don’t like it.

Don’t play the time!

Dress up! I’ll count to nine.

Bear: OK, a naughty thing! I’ll give you a lift.

Get quickly into the basket and sit.

Masha: Hey, Mishka! Ski ahead!

We’ll be in the place in a moment.

Scene VI

(A snowy forest with a little clearing. There is a fire. The daughter and the stepmother look for Brothers -Months.)

Daughter : Oh, mom, it’s so cold

And we can’t find the road.

There's not a single person around.

I wish there would be a sound.( looks around)

Stepmother: Look, my baby, there’s a light over there

Let’s go and warm our hands at the fire.

(There are 12 months around the fire)

January: Wow! What are you doing here?

It’s not the right time to walk,

The weather is severe.

Daughter: We want to get presents from you.

Stepmother: Maybe something delicious, too.

Daughter: Let Brother May pour some ripe, tasty cherry.

Stepmother: Let Brother June put some bigger strawberry.

Daughter: Let Brother August give us mushrooms and pears.

Stepmother: We don’t mind apples…

January: Wait now, chatterers!

It can't be done.

Seasons come one by one.

Summer never comes before spring,

Spring never comes before winter, bar none.

And remember, it’s my turn now.

I’m the master in the forest somehow.

And I will reign for 31 days.

( Snowstorm)

Stepmother: How cross you are, I must say.

We are not here for you.

Why, then, argue?

You are rich only in frost and snow.

We’d like to speak with summer brothers, you know.

January: All in good time!

Daughter: Stop it!

Stepmother: Enough! Why aren’t you kind?

(Daughter and Stepmother become snowdrifts)

Scene VII

(A snowy forest with a little clearing. There are two huge snowdrifts )

Bear: Here we are! Go out and look around.

No snowdrops can be found.

Masha: But it’s the very place, I can swear.

Don’t you believe me, silly bear?

Bear: Ah, Masha. Like it or not, In January it won’t be hot. Everything is good in its season. There are no snowdrops for this reason.

Masha: Look, what huge snowdrifts There are over there! They look like you, my silly bear! Um… What are they?

Bear: Mom and daughter from the tale! They were greedy, silly, rude And were frozen in the wood. Masha: Um… I feel a bit chilly. But I’m not so silly! We’ll ski back home,

Bear: Yes, my naughty gnome! Jump into the basket quickly And sit there quietly!

Scene VIII

(Bear and Masha are in the house. Masha sits down in the armchair with her tablet. Bear comes up to the calendar on the wall)

Bear: Here we are at home at last!

Don’t you forget about forthcoming Christmas!

We’ll have a merry feast! I would hope, at least.

Masha: And what about my presents on holiday? Will there be a Boxing Day? Bear: OK. They won’t be snowdrops, of course. But you’ll find something wonderful, my naughty boss!

Masha: Okie-dokie. I hope it won’t be hokey pokey. By the way, What happened to the draggle-tail?

(Speaker appears on the stage)

Speaker: Her life was wonderful and long. It was like a beautiful song. She had a close family. They lived friendly and happily. Fruits and flowers could be found In her fairy garden all year round. In hot weather it was cool there And terrible snowstorms were rare. People said, all the 12 months Were on a visit in her garden at once.

Masha: Aha! Most fairy-tales are tending

To have a happy ending.

Masha and Bear: Christmas and New Year are drawing near. We wish you happiness and no tears! Hold festivals and have much fun! Merry holidays to everyone!

(All characters sing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”)
