• научиться сообщать информацию о своём крае на английском языке.
• приобрести навыки исследовательской работы.

History

• Tula is one of the ancient towns of our country, its history goes back to 1146. Tula was founded on the banks of the Upa river. The first settlements of Tula were mentioned for the first time in Nikonovskaya chronicle before 1147. In 1611-1612 Tula citizens took part in the struggle against Poland invanders. In 1380 the host of Golden Horde was stopped and crashed at Kulikovo Pole. In 1941 Tula defenders were deterring the tank army of Guderian for 45 daysmaking the enemy to fall back. It was the beginning of the glorious path to the Victory in the World War ІІ. Tula was honoured with the title of “Hero City”.

Geography

• Tula region is situated in the central part of the East European plain on the Middle Russian Hills, Southward of Moscow. The population of the region total 1840000.
• Tula region is bounded by Moscow, Oryol, Ryazan, Kaluga and Lipetsk regions. Tula is in the centre of Tula region. The other towns are: Aleksin, Belyov, Bogoroditsk, Dubna, Odoyev, Plavsk and others.

Some facts about my hometown

• There are many villages and settlements in our region. The whole population of the region is almost two million people. There are no high mountains there, it’s mainly a lowland with beautiful places: picturesque forests and woods, fields and meadows, rivers and ponds.

Cultural and educational centre

• Today ’s Tula is not only an industrial but also a cultural and educational centre of our country. Tula has some research institutions and many educational establishments, such as the Tula Polytechnic and the Teacher Training Universities, many colleges and secondary schools. There are three theatres, a regional philharmonic society, many clubs, palaces of culture, a numerous of libraries and reading rooms.

Many legends are assosiated with Tula skillful workers. Nikolai Leskov’s tale «Levsha» about Tula master is an example.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

• The unique Museum of Arms on the territory of the Tula Kremlin is a symbol of the city. It was founded at the Tula gun factory according to the order of Peter I.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

• The new building of the museum of Arms «Hemlet» is situated in Oktyabrskaya Street. Among Tula historical weapons there are true masterpieces.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

• The Kulikovo battle of 1380 is the most important event in the history of the medieval Russia. The Kulikovo battle became the largest fight of the Middle Ages.
• The Kulikovo Pole is the unique memorial object, the most valuable natural and historical complex.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

• Not a single enemy has ever been to Tula. Our town has always been a fortress in the defence of our Motherland.
• The Victory Square with its eternal flame and the monument to the defenders of Tula, belongs to the sights of Tula.

• Theatres, cinemas, the stadium

with the oldest in Europe cycle track; architectural

monuments contribute to the charm of Tula. Tula

Academic theatre of drama – is one of the oldest

theatres in our country.

• The true fame to the samovar was created by Tula masters. The Lisitsyns brothers Ivan and Nazar marked the beginning of the samovars’ production in Tula by opening in 1778.
• The diffenition of samovars to the purpose was very wide:samovars for boiling water, samovars-coffee-pots, portable samovars.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

• Not far from Tula is Yasnaya Polyana. Here the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy lived and worked for almost all his life. Now it is a Museum. Many people not only from our country but also abroad visit Yasnaya Polyana every day.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

Many remarkable people lived and worked in Tula. Among them is Mosin Sergey Ivanovich-the creator of the famous three-single line rifle, which was used by military men for many years.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

Tula is proud of admiral Vsevolod Fyodorovich Rudnev, who was born in Tula. In 1903 on 27 January the Russian cruiser «Varyag»under the command of V.Rudnev had the unequal fight with the Japaneses-quadron.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

• In 1890-s Vasili Polenov settled down in his estate on the Oka.
• Vasili Polenov was a most interesting and versatile man, a talanted paiter, a gifted musician and architect. A prominent enlightener and public figure.

I am proud of my hometown, because…

S.Esenin visited Tula many times. The most remarkable place in Tula, the poet considered Belousovsky park where the monument to Esenin is situated.
