Henry VIII was born in England in 1491. He was the third child of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Henry was an excellent student. He spoke several languages including Latin; studied philosophy, religion and astronomy. He was an athlete and was skilled in the arts of war. He built the first modern navy.

He wrote prose and poetry. But his real passion was music. He played several musical instruments. Henry composed ballads. He is said to have written “Greensleeves”, which is still one of the most popular folk songs in Britain.

When his father died in 1509, Henry became king. He was not yet 18. Later that year he married Catherine of Aragon. In 1527 when Henry decided to divorce his first wife; the Pope demanded to refuse the divorce. So, Henry cut all ties between the Empire and the papacy and declared himself the head of the Anglican Church. There was a Royal Reformation: the emergence of the Protestant Anglican Church. The main contribution of Henry VIII was the strengthen of absolute monarchy in England and of the unity of the country. He also laid the foundations of an independent foreign policy and of a new political role of England in Europe. Henry VIII was known as the «blood» king.
