Henry viii

(the English king from dynasty Tudor)

• Henry VIII was born in England in 1491. He was the third child of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York.

• Henry was an excellent student. He spoke several languages including Latin; studied philosophy, religion and astronomy.

• He was an athlete and was skilled in the arts of war.
• He built the first modern navy.

• He wrote prose and poetry.

• But his real passion was music. He played several musical instruments.

• Henry composed ballads.

• He is said to have written “Greensleeves”, which is still one of the most popular folk songs in Britain.

• When his father died in 1509, Henry became king. He was not yet 18. Later that year he married Catherine of Aragon.

• In 1527 when Henry decided to divorce his first wife; the Pope demanded to refuse the divorce. So, Henry cut all ties between the Empire and the papacy and declared himself the head of the Anglican Church.

• There was a Royal Reformation: the emergence of the Protestant Anglican Church.

• The main contribution of Henry VIII was the strengthen of absolute monarchy in England and of the unity of the country.

• He also laid the foundations of an independent foreign policy and of a new political role of England in Europe.

• Henry VIII was known as the «blood» king.

• After the first divorce Henry soon married Anne Boleyn . She gave him one child, Elizabeth. In 1536 he charged Anne with unfaithfulness and had her put to death.

• A few days later he married his third wife, Jane Seymour . She died a year later, after giving birth to a son.

• A marriage was then arranged with a German princess, Anne of Cleves . Henry soon divorced her.

• Later that same year, 1540, he married again. His fifth wife was Catherine Howard. Henry had her put to death.

• In 1543 Henry took his last wife, Catherine Parr, who outlived him.

The king died in 1547 in London.

Three of his children succeeded to the English throne.
