I. Evocation Today we have an unusual lesson. But first of all I want you to guess one word. Look at the board. You can see a list of words. There is one missing letter in each word. Please, write down each missing letter.

2. You see the word MUSIC, Our lesson is devoted to music. We are going to speak about the role of music in our life, about famous performers and styles of music. Of course we shall listen to music. The topic of our lesson is “Truly, Madly, Deeply”. Later you will learn why our lesson has such a title.

3. On the board you can see a charming quotation: “Music is a free art, an open air art, an art boundless as the wind, the sky the sea”. (Debussy).

4. Comment on it.

II. Realization of meaning.

5. Answer the following question:

  • Can you live without music?

6. Discuss the following questions about music.

  • Do you like music?

  • What kind of music do you like?

  • Do you prefer Russian or foreign music?

  • What group do you like to listen to?

  • What singers do you like best of all?

  • Would you like to be a popular singer? Why?

  • What do you think about when you listen to music?

7. I fully agree with you. When I listen to music I can think about nothing but music. As far as you know music may be different. I see you like music very much. There are many people from the world of music. They are pop stars. And would you like to become a star. How do you think what is necessary to be a pop star?

Brainstorm the sentence: “To be a pop -star you must…”

8. Fill in each of the blank spaces using one of the following words. So you will get more info about one of the greatest American pop-star Elvis Presley.

9. I see you like music and now it’s high time to listen to your projects. Be very attentive because you will have a small test. Also you will listen some pieces of musical works.

Group 1 presents jazz.

Group 2 presents classical music.

Group 3 presents rock music.

Group 4 presents folk music.

Group 5 presents pop music.

10. Now check yourself listening to brief info about type of music and guess what type of music it is. While listening you have to fill in the table, with necessary numbers.



  • One can hear this music at theatres, on TV and over the radio. This music was composed by such great composers as Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. Performers usually sing or dance to this music.

  • This music is popular mostly with young people. It is performed by modern electronic instruments. There are hard and heavy-metal styles.

  • This music lives for centuries. Every nation has its own national music and dance ensembles.

  • It is a musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words.

  • It is an American style of music. It was created by black Americans. The constant elements are improvisation.

  • You can hear this music every day and everywhere. There a lot of musical groups who perform this kind of music.

14. You know that English is an international language of business and communication. A lot of people speak English. I want to tell that songs can be affective tool in language learning. Songs are a powerful medium for acquiring new knowledge. Once Milli Yrenough said: Learn English through songs.” And I invite you to look at the board. There you can see the words from the song “Truly, Madly, Deeply» by the Australian pop duo “Savage Garden». Listen to it and fill in the missing words. Check your words with your neighbor’s.

15. At the end of our lesson let’s play the game “Mystery Woman” and “Mystery Man”.

Mystery man: Yes, I did.

Level – 9-10. Prepare a video or multimedia presentation about your favorite band or a singer.

17. Summing Up of the lesson:

Each group has a sticker on their desk. Please write on it what stages of the lesson you liked most of all, things that were useful for you and things that were new for you. Go to the board and stick your stickers on it.

18. Evaluation.

So my dear friends, today you have had opportunity to express your attitude to music. You were creative at the lesson. I liked your music projects. You really did your best and I am extremely pleased to have such good students. Today we have done a lot of work: we listened, guessed, read, played games, spoke English and we understood “What is Music.” I think you agree with the words that “Music is the language of our soul.”
