мероприятие по английскому языку

Тема: Великие англичане – Уильям Шекспир

Цели: практические-совершенствовать навыки устной речи по теме,

Воспитательные - воспитывать интерес к стране изучаемого языка;

умение сотрудничать друг с другом

Развивающие - развивать способности учащихся в драматизации.

Introduction. Famous Shakespeare’s quotations.



Teacher: William Shakespeare! This name has been known for many centuries.” Soul of the age! The applause! Delight! The wonder of our stage!” Ben Johnson said. If only people do not know much about Shakespeare, they know his quotations.

Беда не приходит одна-“False face must hide what the false heart doth know.” (“Hamlet”).

Лучшие люди те, кто говорят мало.- “Men of few words are the best men” (“King Henry V”)

Лучше остроумный дурак, чем глупый остряк- “Better a witty fool than a foolish wit” (“Twelfth Night”)

Что сделано-того не переделать- “What’s done can’t be undone”(“Macbeth”) Мы знаем. Кто мы, но не знаем. кем мы можем быть-“We know what we are? but we know not what we may be”

( Обучающиеся подбирают английские эквиваленты к высказываниям из произведений Шекспира)

Scientific arguments against Shakespeare.

Teacher: We know about Shakespeare but may be do not know the latest discoveries on the question if Shakespeare of Stratford was a real dramatist or somebody else wrote all these wonderful plays and sonnets. Listen to some versions.

Pupil. Studying historic facts scientists found out some discrepancies. One of them is the following. Shakespeare’s imprint on his head stone and his imprint on the graving of his first publication made seven years later after his death is not similar at all. In spite of the fact, that they were made by their contemporaries.

Pupil 2. One more fact. On the monument in Stratford Church Shakespeare is depicted with a pen. It appeared the pen was done later in the 18th century. In 1622 when the monument was errected Shakespeare’s hands were lying on a sack, may be with gold, and may be with wool.

Pupil 3. One of the Russian Shakespeare researchers Ilya Gililov wrote his famous book “Play about William Shakespeare or the mystery of Great Phoenix”, the first publication was in 1997 and has become a bestseller, increasing hot discussions till nowadays. According to his version Shakespeare was not real Shakespeare from Stratford. That Shakespeare was illiterate. He couldn’t even write his name. Gililov is sure that the real Shakespeare was Earl Ratland and may be his wife Sydney, the daughter of the great poet of that time. They wrote plays but signed them “Shakespeare”. They thought out a great joke with the name of Shakespeare. Gililov considered they created this myth for ages. They died almost at the same time. There were no plays signed “Shakespeare” after their death.

Teacher: There are also other versions: Frances Bacon, Countless Mary Pambrok, Sir Henry Nevill

But all of them can’t be taken as real argument. When we read Shakespeare it is not necessary for us who the real Shakespeare was, we admire his talent, genius, and his characters.

What do you know for sure about this wonderful name?

Shakespeare’s life and works

Pupil 4 .William Shakespeare was born on or about April 23, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. His father was a glover and a dealer with wool and other products. In his childhood William went to Grammar School where, besides reading and writing, he was taught Latin. When actors visited Stratford he liked to watch them. In 1582 at just over 18 Shakespeare Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter. They had a daughter and two sons.

Teacher: So, what happened then?

Pupil 5. Life in Stratford was intolerable for William: there was no money to earn, so he left for London. We know nothing about his life for the next 7 years. But we know for certain that in 1592 a playwright Robert Green wrote an angry pamphlet on Shakespeare from which we may conclude that by that time Shakespeare had become a dramatist.

Pupil 6. Shakespeare wrote most of his plays for the Globe Theatre. He was a very good actor himself but since, it often happens that the director of a play takes the shorter part for himself. We are told that Shakespeare himself only played the Ghost of Hamlet’s father. Shakespeare lived in London for 25 years. He wrote 154 sonnets, 2 long poems and 37 plays. In 1612 he left London He died on the 23d of April 1616. His tomb is in the Stratford Church. Four lines are inscribed on it:

“Good friend, for Jesus’ sake, forbear

To dig the dust enclosed here:

Blessed be he that spares these stones,

And cursed be he that moved my bones.”

ты прах под камнем сим не трогай.
Сна не тревожь костей моих,
будь проклят тот, кто тронет их.


It is believed that these lines have prevented the removal of his remains from his native place to Westminster Abbey.

Teacher: Do you know his plays? What are they? Let’s speak about two of them, the most famous all over the world.

“Hamlet”

Pupil 7. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark learns of his father’s death and hurries home from the University where he studies. On his arrival Hamlet is shocked at finding his mother married to his uncle, his father’s brother. The suspicion that his uncle is guilty of murder and disappointment in people makes him lose faith in humanity and fall into a mood of depression.



Hamlet’s monologue: To be, or not to be: that is the question:

Whether’t is nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep,

No more, and by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh in heir to, it is a consummation

Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep…

Teacher: What are the main ideas of this monologue?

Pupil 8. The question with which Hamlet confronts us is those which seek an answer in every heart. The problem of “to be or not to be”- the problem of life inequalities and injustices, of the suffering of the innocent, the sense of the world beauty and wonder, the mystery of the power of evil: These are things that touch all that always interest mankind. Hamlet is an essentially tragic figure. He fulfilled the task which was laid upon him-to revenge his fathers’ murder-but fulfilled it in horrible cost: the lives of his mother, Ophelia, Polonius, Laertes, Rozencrantz and himself. The play is full of wisdom life.

Teacher: now the next play

Romeo and Juliet” is the most popular love story.

Pupil 9. Romeo and Juliet belong to families, the Montegues and the Capulets, separated for generations a vicious feud. Nevertheless they meet and fall in love with each other. Knowing that their parents will oppose their relationship, they marry in secret. But the family feud continues to range around them and compels their deaths.

It is a tragic and wonderful story. The feuds of Capulet and Montegue raise the storm in which young love is wrecked. But the death of the young lovers is the death of the old hate between the two families.

Teacher: Why do you think this sad story still finds an emotional response with the audience?

Pupil 10. Shakespeare told us: love mustn’t be killed. It is forever. Only love makes people be kind and strong, it makes people overcome all difficulties.

To sum up our speaking, Shakespeare is so great writer that every generation discoveries new ideas in his works. Even today we find ideas and problems dealt with in his plays that were not considered before. These are the social problems concerning the relations of man to man in human society. So, read Shakespeare and find a lot of answers on difficult questions.

Nor gates or steel so strong, but Time decays?

O fearful meditation! Where, alack,

Shall time’s best jewel from Time’s chest lie hid?

Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back?

Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?

O, none, unless this miracle have might,

That in black ink my love may still shine bright.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit imprediments. Love is not love

Which alters which its alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove.

O no, it is an ever-fixed mark.

That looks on tempest, and it never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth unknown, although its height be taken

Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Whithin his bending sickle’s compass come;

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error, and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Juliet: O, Romeo, Romeo! Where for art thou Romeo?

Deny thy father and refuse thy name;

Or, if thou will not, be but sworn my love

And I’ll now longer be a Capulet.


Romeo: Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?


Juliet: Tis but my name that is my enemy.

Thou art thyself, thou not a Montague!

What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,

Nor arm, nor face nor any other part

Belonging to a man! O, be some other name!

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet.

So Romeo, would, were he not Romeo call’d,

Retain that dear perfection which he owes

Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name:

And for thy name, which is no part of thee,

Take all myself.

Romeo: I take thee at my word.

Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptiz’d,

Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
