Test 1.

Variant 1

1). Read the text and decide if the statements are true or false.

Television is a way of sending sound and pictures through the air. Scientists have been interested in the idea of television since the 1880s. Although John Logie Baird was the first to show how television worked, his success was based on work by many other scientists from all over the world. Baird showed his set in 1926. Colour television began in the United States in 1956. At first, all television was black and white. Few people owned television sets because they were very expensive. Now nearly every home has one.

Television works by changing light waves into electric signals. This happens inside the TV camera. A picture of what is happening in front of the camera forms on a special screen behind the lens. Behind the screen is an electron gun. It moves from left to right to cover each part of the picture. Each part is turned into an electric signal, which is made stronger, then sent to the transmitter as radio waves. They are picked up by home TV antennas and changed back into electric signals. The TV screen is covered with tiny chemical dots. At the back there are other electron guns. As each electron hits the screen, it lights up a dot. These tiny flashes of colour build up the picture on the screen.

Live television programmes show you what is happening as it happens. Most programmes are recorded on film or videotape and sent out later.

Тест 4

Variant 1

1.Read the article and find the right answer (True/False)

The family has always been very important in all times and societies. However, contemporary families differ a lot from large traditional families.

A traditional family had a similar structure in different countries. It consisted of several generations and was headed by the eldest man in the family. For example, an ideal traditional Chinese family consisted of the head of the family and his wife, their three or four sons and their wives (the daughters didn’t live in the family as they moved to their husbands’ families after the wedding) and a dozen grandchildren. People lived shorter lives then, and that’s why usually there were no more than three generations in a family.

Children were absolutely dependent on their parents and grandparents, and the status, role and behavior of each member of the family were strictly regulated. Nobody could break the rules. The interests of the family were above the interests of an individual member. If anyone ignored or betrayed the family interests, they were punished very severely. Most traditional families in Russia, Ukraine, and Poland looked the same.

Nowadays families are much smaller. They often consist of two generations only: parents and their dependent children. The family of this kind is called a nuclear family. There are no male and female responsibilities within the family. This means that women go to work and earn money, and men often help with cooking, washing and some other work round the house.

Children behave differently too. They are allowed to express their point of view and take part in decision-making on different family issues. Sometimes they can even ignore the senior generation’s recommendations or advice, which was absolutely impossible in traditional families. Children are more independent nowadays, and when they grow up, they often prefer to live apart from their parents. Having separate homes, however, doesn’t matter much as long as adult children care for their parents and remember to help them.

1. The author thinks that nowadays the family is bigger than it used to be in old times.

2. The author says that a traditional Chinese family consisted of three generations living together.

3. Parents in modern families don’t allow children to express their disagreement or argue in any way.

4. The article says that nowadays children can’t ignore the senior generation’s advice.

5. The author thinks that nowadays adult children prefer to live with their parents in one place.

Hanami: A Flowering Celebration!

The beginning of spring (March-April) is a very special time in Japan, because this is when Japan’s famous cherry trees come into flower. The Japanese celebrate this happy time with festivals and flower-viewing parties. At the end of winter, everyone’s excitement starts to grow. The whole country wants to know the exact day when the cherry flowers (‘sakura’) will appear. Starting in February, weathermen try to guess when this day will be. When the first flowers open on the trees, national joy breaks out! There are rides and games for children in the street, music and dance performances, tea ceremonies, flower displays, and much more. But the most special thing that people do at this time is have ‘hanami’ parties. Hanami means flower watching. In hanami parties, families and friends take a picnic and go and sit under a cherry tree to look at and admire the flowers. Hanami parties take place during the daytime and also at night, because when it is dark, lights light up the cherry trees. Hanami is very important to the Japanese. Cherry blossoms appear on trees for only one week before they fall to the ground and die, and for the Japanese this symbolises the short nature of childhood and life. So hanami is a time when Japanese people like to think about how important life is.

1) Spring is the Japanese people’s favourite time of year.

2) It is not easy to know the day the cherry flowers will open.

3) Hanami takes place a week after the cherry trees blossom.

4) In hanami parties, families and friends admire the flowers in the countryside.
