St. Valentine’s Day
I. Read the text:
St. Valentine’s Day
St. Valentine’s Day has roots in several legends. Cupid, the Roman God of Love, is one of the earliest popular symbols of the day. Valentine was a Christian priest. He lived three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ in the Roman Empire. On February 14 Valentine was killed because he was a Christian. He married couples contrary to the laws of the Roman Empire. St. Valentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. We celebrate it on February 14. Most people send “valentines”, sentimental greeting cards, to those whom they love but don’t mention their names. Valentines can be heart-shaped or can have hearts on them. Sometimes people exchange presents or give roses as a sign of love.
