The discovery of the orthodox city of Voronezh starts with the Annunciation Cathedral that is located in the centre of the city in Revolution Avenue. The designer of it was the architect Kovalyov V.P. The citizens call it Blagoveschensky sobor.

Blagoveshchenski was the name of the first wooden church built in Voronezh. In 1682 it became the cathedral under the first St. Mitrofan of Voronezh. After the fires in 1690 the stone Annunciation Cathedral was erected.

In 1696 Peter the First was present at the Easter liturgy in the cathedral and ordered to fire a shot from the ships of the Fleet. In 1836 a monastery was founded around Blagoveshchensky sobor. It was named after St. Mitrofan of Voronezh and became the major centre of the spiritual life of the city and the eparchy.

After the Revolution Blagoveshchensky sobor and St.Mitrofan monastery were closed and demolished by the Bolsheviks. Nowadays at this place there is the main building of Voronezh State University.

The erection of the present day Annunciation Cathedral began on the territory of Aleksandrovski garden on Assumption of Virgin Mary holiday in 1998. Saint Alexei, Patriarch of Moscow and the Great Russia sanctified the first stone of the future cathedral.

The church was patterned after St. Vladimir's Cathedral, built in the late 19th century in a Russo-Byzantine style. The majestic cathedral is the third largest church in Russia and one of the tallest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world. 450mln rubles were collected by the citizens of Voronezh for its construction. It consists of two parts: the upper and the lower temples and can get in up to 6,000 people.

It is beautiful in any season and in any time of the day. The central dome of the church is crowned with the shining golden cross that is 83 meters high and the spire of the bell tower has shot up to the unimaginable height. On the bell tower of the Annunciation Cathedral there is a six-ton church bell. Its small domes are decorated with the crosses that are smaller in size. The church crosses are visible from many places of the city; they display the triumph of Orthodoxy on Voronezh land. The interior of the cathedral consists of the central prayer area and several surrounding galleries. The main vault of the cathedral has a large iconostasis, which includes icons of the 14th-17th centuries.

Quite a number of sacred things: particles of the 12 Apostles' relics, the wonder-working relics of St. Mitrofan of Voronezh, St. Tikhon of Voronezh and Zadonsk, martyr Pyotr of Voronezh and some other sacred things are being kept in the Annunciation Cathedral.

In front of the Annunciation Cathedral you can see the bronze monument to St. Mitrofan of Voronezh with four angels around it. It was made by the sculptors I.P.Dikunov, E.N.Pak and their sons, and the architect V.P.Shevelev and opened during the celebrations devoted to the days of Slavonic written language and culture in 2003.

In Aleksandrovski garden not far from the Annunciation Cathedral there is a consecrated stone, marble gravestones and planted trees in memory of Chernobyl tragedy.

In present, the cathedral performs its duties, it is open every day, the Divine services are held on the feast days.

The Annunciation Cathedral is a living picture of a prayer in stone and the decoration of the long-suffering city. The parishioners call it “the heart of Chernozemye”.

Открытие православного Воронежа начинается с Благовещенского кафедрального собора, расположенного в центре города на проспекте Революции. Собор возведён по проекту архитектора В. П. Шевелёва.

Благовещенский – так назывался первый храм, построенный в Воронеже. В 1682 году при первом епископе Воронежском святителе Митрофане Благовещенский храм стал кафедральным собором. После многочисленных пожаров в 1690 был построен каменный кафедральный собор.

В 1834 году вокруг Благовещенского собора образовался монастырь, получивший имя Митрофановского.

В 1696 году Петр Великий слушал здесь Пасхальную утреню. Когда начали Пасхальный канон, по приказу государя был произведен пушечный залп с судов флота. В1836 году при Благовещенском Соборе был учрежден Благовещенский Митрофанов монастырь, который был важнейшим центром духовной жизни города и епархии.

После революции Благовещенский Собор и Митрофанов монастырь разделили судьбу многих православных святынь. Вначале они был закрыты, а в 50-е годы разрушены большевиками. На месте Собора и монастыря ныне находится главный корпус Воронежского государственного университета.

Возведение нового собора на территории Александровского сада началось в 1998 году. Первый камень был заложен 28 августа — в праздник Успения Пресвятой Богородицы. Закладной камень в основание нового храма освятил ныне покойный патриарх Московский и всея Руси Алексий II в 1998 году.

Вновь построенный собор по своей архитектуре напоминает Владимирский собор Воронежа, построенный в конце 19 века в Русско-Византийском стиле. Величественный собор является третьим по величине в России и одним из самых высоких православных храмов в мире. Символ Воронежа построен на народные деньги. На его сооружение было собрано около 450 млн. рублей. Собор состоит из двух частей: верхнего и нижнего храмов и способен вместить до 6 тысяч человек.

Собор хорош в любое время года и в любое время суток. Центральную главу собора венчает величественный купол с сияющим золотом крестом. Крест достигает высоты 83 метра, а шпиль колокольни взметнулся на невообразимую высоту. На колокольне Благовещенского собора установлен шести тонный благовест. Малые купола украшены крестами поменьше. Кресты собора видны из многих мест города зримо вещая торжество православия воронежской земле.

Внутри собора в центре есть молитвенное место и несколько мест для певчих. Иконостас с иконами 14-18 веков выглядит впечатляюще и величественно.

В Благовещенском соборе хранятся частицы мощей 12 апостолов, мощи святителя Митрофана Воронежского, чудотворные мощи святителя Тихона, епископа Воронежского и Задонского и священномученника Петра (Зверева), архиепископа Воронежского и другие святыни.

В 2003 году, в рамках празднования дня Славянской письменности и культуры, по проекту скульпторов И. П. Дикунова и Эльзы Пак перед собором был установлен памятник первому

воронежскому епископу Митрофану. Архитектурная часть памятника выполнена по проекту В. П. Шевелева. Скульптура отлита из бронзы, её окружают четыре ангела.

В Первомайском саду неподалеку от собора освящен камень, высажены деревья и установлены памятные гранитные плиты ликвидаторам последствий аварии на Чернобыльской АЭС.

18 сентября 2011 года Патриарх Московский и всея Руси Кирилл совершил чин великого освящения Благовещенского кафедрального собора.

Благовещенский кафедральный собор является действующим храмом, богослужения в Благовещенском кафедральном соборе Воронежской и Борисоглебской епархии совершаются ежедневно.

Благовещенский Кафедральный Собор– воплощение молитвы в камне и украшение многострадального города. Верующие называют его «сердцем Черноземья».
