First of all let me introduce myself.
My name is Artur. I am fourteen years old. I'm in the 8th grade.
Teenagers use abbreviation in their speech more and more. Many teenagers are sure that it is very difficult to understand English abbreviations. On the other hand, there are teenagers who suppose that it is not so difficult as it seems.
The problem of the research work is:
to find out how teenagers should learn to understand better the abbreviations in chat, namely, in online games.
The goal of the study is:
- to prove that students will understand English abbreviations if they use them more often.
The main tasks are:
- to provide the definition of slang,
- to find out the types of English slang and abbreviations in online games;
- to create my website with the list of commonly used slang, smileys and acronyms.
- to interview the classmates;
- to create my exercises
Methods of the research: theoretical - analysis of the specialized literature on the problem under study; diagnostic - questioning, testing; experimental - statistical processing and analysis of experimental data on the topic, fixing the results.
Practical importance is that my classmates can use my website with the list of commonly used slang, smileys and acronyms in their life und while studying.
Slang of online games has appeared not so long ago but it is becoming more and more popular among young people who are true lovers of up to date online games.
Let us consider slang of several popular online games.
The first category is related to the names of games.
For example, LoL (League of Legends).
The second group of words concerns terms and abridgment, which are used by all the gamers independent from the game type or a plot. For example, all the gamers can apply such words and abbreviation as bg (battleground- place of battle, place of meeting), quest (game's aim, achievement of it, the main idea of the game) and levels.
A general wordlist related to slang of almost all the gamers is provided below:
- AFK = «away from the keyboard». The abbreviation is used when a gamer would like to go away from a computer for a short time. ( - отошёл от клавиатуры/компьютера)
Nerf= Nerfing. The name is taken from the popular toy brand, as "nerf" products are foamy, less dangerous versions of the real things.(- ослабление персонажа, НПС (неигрового персонажа - монстра) или какого-либо умения.
Some phrases are used to show emotions of gamers.
-FTW! = «For the win!» Guys, let's take ftw.-Kewl = cool. «We’ve done it! It's kewl!»
The following list of slang expressions is used if the gamers have some problems with the Internet:
Dust — карта со сценарием закладки бомбы в Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

MID - middle - центр карты;
Long - самая длинная часть карты;
T/CT spanwn - точки возрождения команд;
Pit - углубление на карте;
T/CT ramp - плавный подъём на карте;
The interview
In practical part of my research, I want to show the results of investigation that I have done. I asked students of the eights
form of our school the following questions:
- Do you play online games?
- What genres of computer games do you prefer?
- How often do you play computer games?
- What language do you use in computer games?
- How do you improve your English while you play computer games?
- What useful life skills do you get playing computer games?
23 pupils of the 8 th form were asked these questions.
Here are the results of my survey.
- Number of pupils playing computer games:
Yes – 16 pupils (70% of interviewed)
No – 7 pupils (30%)
2. Genres of computer games that pupils prefer to play:
Mixed genres of games – 12 pupils (53%)
Shooter games and strategies – 5 pupils (21%)
Training programs and puzzle video games – 3 pupils (13%)
Simulation video games – 3 pupils (13%)
3.Time spent on playing computer games:
All free time – 4 pupils (17%)
Some hours a day – 9 pupils (39%)
One hour a day – 5 pupils (21%)
Several times a week – 2 pupils (10%)
Seldom or on weekends – 3 pupils (13%)
4. Languages used in computer games English: – 10 pupils (43%)
Russian – 13 pupils (57%)
- Abilities and skilles that are improved while children play computer games:
The ability to learn new English words

The ability to understand other people speaking
– 13 pupils (57%)
The ability to read faster and understand written texts – 3 pupils (13%)
- Useful life skills that children get playing computer games:
Ability to interact – 10 pupils (43%)
Quick reaction – 6 pupils (24%)
Strategic thinking – 3 pupils (13%)

In order to improve the translation skills of chat abbreviations, I created my website with the list of commonly used slang, smileys and acronym with translation.

In order to improve the level of knowledge of the translation of chat abbreviations among learners, I developed my test on this topic. The experiment was done among the students of 8 "B" form. During the work of improving the level of knowledge of the translation of words, there have been positive changes in the level of knowledge among students. I tested it with the help of special tasks.

As a result of experimental work, the level of knowledge of the translation of chat abbreviations among students has significantly increased.
High levels have reached - 60%, 50%, 15%, 80%, 75%;
medium - 35%, 35%,25%,15%,20%;
low level - 10%,15%,60%,5%,5% ;
As a result, I observed positive changes.

In conclusion , it should be saying that study and repetition of chat abbreviations gives an efficiency in mastering the material. Now I talk with my classmates and friends using some English abbreviations.
The aim of the research is achieved.
