This lesson is designed around  short  films which show images of Sydney and Moscow. In the lessons they learn vocabulary related to cities, describe features of both cities and then compare them, and then watch the short film.

Language level: Pre-intermediate (A2) –Intermediate (B1)

 Time: 60 minutes

Activity: Describing a city, comparing two cities, watching a short film, speaking and writing

Topic: Cities,Sydney and Moscow

Language: Vocabulary related to cities and comparatives

Materials: Short films

Step 1

I ask my students what adjectives spring to mind when they think of Moscow.I write the most common adjectives on the board.

 Step 2

I ask my students what adjectives spring to mind when they think of New York. I write the most common adjectives on the board.

Step 3

I dictate the following words:

bridge       graffiti

traffic      traffic lights

inhabitants  neon signs

bikes        cars

buses        underground

statues      monuments

buildings    skyline

Step 4

I divide the class into two groups. I tell one group that they should think about Moscow and consider what the items in Step 3 might look like in Moscow.I  tell the other group they should do the same, but thinking about Sydney.

 Step 5

Each student now has to work with a member of the other group, and explain how they imagine the items in their city. They should try to compare and contrast the two cities.

Step 6 I get feedback from the whole class, and write up some sentences in which students compare Moscow and Sydney. If necessary I revise comparative forms.   Step 7 I tell my students they are going to watch a short film in which they will see images of both Moscow and Sydney. As they watch their task is to notice any similarities and differences between the two cities. Show the film.

Step 8

I get feedback and ask them to talk about any similarities and differences between Moscow and Sydney.

 Step 9

I pair my students and ask them to imagine they are filmmakers who want to create a film which compares their city or town with either Moscow or Sydney. They should discuss what images they would use to represent their city or town using the items in Step 3.

 Step 10

I will hold a plenary session on what images the students would use to represent their city or town.

 Homework

I Ask my students to write a composition in which they compare their city or town with Moscow or Sydney using the vocabulary in Step 3.
