Children grow up and at one moment they want to have their own pocket money. Pocket money and how to spend it is one of the most important topics. Some people think if teens have pocket money it will help them to be independent. Others suppose that teenagers can’t spend their money correctly. Who is right that is a controversial question?

Relevance of the topic

The theme of money in the modern society is “emotionally charged”. A beautiful life of pop-stars, exciting advertisements and temptation of brilliant shop’s showcases. Where should we get money and how we should spend it? These questions are difficult even for adults. But all of us need money and teenagers are not exception of the rule. So we came to the topic of pocket money for teenagers and all we said before identified the plot of our research.

Purposes :

• To explore the importance of pocket money.
• To analyze the way of getting pocket money in Russia and America.
• To research the teens’ needs in pocket money.

Objectives :

• To interview teenagers about pocket money.
• To identify the most popular mistakes of using pocket money.
• To make a list of recommendations of using pocket money on the base of findings.

The objects of research :

Pocket money and teens.

Theoretical part

What is pocket money?

Pocket money is the money that you get and can spend. It may be that your parents and caregivers give you money again and again, or you may get a regular amount of money, for example every week or once a month.

Some families don't give pocket money regularly; they just hand over money to their kids when they want it. Sometimes people in the family may give you money for birthdays or Christmas. Furthermore, kids can earn a sum of money doing some partial work such as baby-sitting, washing the cars, delivering the newspapers and so on. All this we can call the pocket money - money that you can spend on what you want.

But many families start saving accounts for kids and expect part of their pocket money should be saved.

Practical part

Experiment 1

To know more about Russian teenagers’ attitude to pocket money we suggested them to answer some questions and conducted a survey in the internet.

How do you get pocket money?

128 persons took part in the interview.

How much pocket money do you usually spend per month?

98 persons took part in the interview.

What do you spend pocket money for?

96 persons took part in the interview.

So we can see that most of Russian teenagers get money from their parents from time to time. Only 2 persons from 128 earn money by themselves. But thanks to known information we know that situation in America is different from our country. Most American teenagers earn money by themselves. But both American teenagers and we spend money for entertainment or personal needs. We are alike in this point. And according to the surveys we know that Russian and American teenagers spend at least 1500 – 2000 roubles per month.

Experiment 2

“ What can you say about pocket money?”

Russian teenagers:

“ I spend about 1000 roubles per month and spend it for entertainments. Pocket money gives us opportunity for entertainments and it makes us happy.”

“ My parents don’t give me pocket money. But I earn pocket money by myself. I think that it will help me to allocate my money correctly.”

“ I often spend money for my personal needs. In my opinion, pocket money is a useful thing for teenagers. It gives them chance to buy things they want.”

“ Sometimes pocket money is necessary for teenagers. For example: sometimes we should buy something for school.”

“ I think that the distribution of their own money can give the children an opportunity to navigate easily in the economic sphere in the future.”

“ I think pocket money is necessary because I'm a musician and I need money for music accessories. If my parents do not give me money, I'll earn it myself.”

“ My parents give me 1,000 roubles per month. Of course I have enough money but there is no extra money. I think that it’s important not to spoil the child.”

Experiment 3

We said before that way of getting money influence on attitude to money. 80% of American teenagers have a job during their school year. Russian teenagers ask their parents to give them money. At this stage of work we determine how it affects on their life today.

It teaches them to be responsible, to arrive on time, to organize how to spend money and to work with them.

Teenagers who work a lot of hours are less likely to finish school with good grades.

Teenagers have enough time for studying, don’t spending it for work. Doctors say that way of getting money for teenagers in our country is safer for nervous system. Because teens don’t panic about how to get money.

Teenagers less responsible for their money. It’s difficult correctly organize money for them. It leads to buying unnecessary things.

Rules about getting and spending pocket money

Conclusion:

• Teenagers really need pocket money. It helps them rest, spend time well with their friends and buy something they want.
• Both American and Russian teenagers have the same amount of money.
• Both American and Russian teenagers have a different attitude to money.
• If you earn money yourself, you will learn how to spend it.
• You should be responsible for keeping your pocket money and try not to spend it silly.
