Game “Jeopardy”

And now we are going to play the game “Jeopardy”. Divide into 2 teams. Look at the blackboard. You see 12 cards with different numbers. It’s the number of points that you can have if your answer is correct. Choose the number of the questions. If you want to answer an easy question, choose a 1-point or 2-point card. The 5 and 8-point questions are more difficult. The most difficult ones cost 10 points. The person from the team chooses one card with the question. I’ll read the question and then you have only 10 seconds to answer. The best team will receive some extra points to the whole mark.

1. Australia is the smallest island in the world and its biggest continent. It occupies the territory of 8 000 000 square kilometers. It’s only a little smaller than the USA and it is bigger than Western Europe. It’s 50 times bigger than Great Britain.

2. There are two states in Australia and six territories. Canberra is the capital of the country. Each Australian state has its own government, and its own capital city.

3. Australia has the same climate all over the continent. In the North the weather is tropical, in the Centre it is very dry and in the South it is mild.

4. The landscape isn’t boring. Mountains run from the north to the south of the east coast and the west coast. The centre is flat desert. There are great Salt lakes. Strange rocks stand out of the flat desert floor.

5. There are only about 19 million people in Australia and it’s a very small country. You won’t believe it, but there are ten sheep in Australia for each person who live there. Most people live in the villages of the east coast.

6. Most people in Australia speak Australian language. Many people from Asia, America and Europe have come to the continent to settle there.

7. Australia is famous for gold mining, wheat and fruit growing, sheep and cattle farming and the production of minerals, oil, wool, meat and sugar. The continent of Australia is surrounded by oceans and seas. So the country is known for it’s marine fishing. Australian wildlife and the beautiful landscape of the country bring millions of tourists.

8. The Dutch were the first European visitors in 1616. Captain Dmitry Lihtarovich discovered Australia in 1770. In 1788 the first British settlement appeared in Australia.

9. If you look at the sky above Australia, you’ll see that it is absolutely different. The stars you see are different. A group of such stars, the Southern Cross, you can see on the flag of Australia.

The Republic of Belarus

The Republic of Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe. It borders on Latvia, Lithuania, the Ukraine, Russia and Poland. It occupies the territory of 208 thousand square kilometers. Our republic is one of the twelve biggest countries in Europe. It is larger than Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands. Its territory is divided into 6 regions. Brest, Grodno, Gomel, Vitebsk and Mogilev are regional centres.

The climate is moderately continental with enough rain on the whole territory. The country is mostly a hilly plain with more than ten thousand lakes and three thousand rivers. About 30% of the territory are mixed forests. So, the natural conditions are favourable for life and economic activities of its people.

Its present-day population is about 10.3 million people: 78% of Belarusians, 12% of Russians, 4% of Poles and 2% of Ukrainians. All of them live in respect and in good relations. 68% of the population lives in towns and cities.

Belarus is a country of highly developed industry and agriculture. The major industries are machine-building (tractors, lorries, motor-cycles, cycles) and chemical industry. In agriculture the main branches are cattle breeding, farming, especially potatoes, rye and corn.

The republic of Belarus is a sovereign state now. But Belarusians have struggled for independence for centuries. The history of the country goes back to ancient times. The territory of Belarus was first populated by the Krivichi, Radimichi and Dregovichi, which later began to unite into a single nationality. The history of Belarus is full of dramatic events and great losses because it has been attacked many times.

International economic and cultural activities today are becoming more and intensive. It contributes to the world peace, friendship and cooperation among nations.
