FACTORIES, MILLS, AND INDUSTRIES WERE RAPIDLY EXPANDING, DRAWING PEOPLE FROM RURAL AREAS TO CITIES IN SEARCH OF EMPLOYMENT.

THE RAPID INDUSTRIALIZATION LED TO STARK SOCIAL DISPARITIES. THE WEALTHY ELITE, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE "ROBBER BARONS," AMASSED ENORMOUS FORTUNES, WHILE MANY WORKERS ENDURED POOR WORKING CONDITIONS, LOW WAGES, AND LONG HOURS. SOCIAL INEQUALITY AND POVERTY WERE PRESSING ISSUES?
