Surrounded with snowy peaks of highland

The beauty at the sea, Makhachkala, my soul,

My destiny, my love, the Caspian ancient legend,

For centuries you seem so strong and hard like stone.

L ife-giving source of kindness, my friend,

My hearth me welcoming warmly

E very time, when I come back,

Your son, who wand ‘ring was so longly

The hoary antiquity all around,

The sea, the trees, they have known

Wars and losses, which can’t be counted

T heir memories in monuments are shown.

Avenues and blooming parks in hearts

My native people’s open hearts

For years Gamzatov’s poetry inspiring.

All the time it’s been for us the guiding star.
