  1. How many artificial languages are there in the world?

  2. Why did L. Zamenhof decided to create a universal language?

  3. Why didn’t L. Zamenhof turn one of the existing languages into a universal one?

  4. Why was the new artificial language called Esperanto?

  5. What are the main features of Esperanto?

  6. Did L. Zamenhof want people to speak Esperanto instead of their native languages?

  7. Why are people still interested in learning Esperanto?

  1. Esperanto is the easiest language to learn. In terms of hours, it takes four times less to learn Esperanto than any other European language. The words sound familiar to anyone who knows a European language. Esperanto has one definite article and no indefinite articles, nouns have no gender, and all the verbs are regular. The number of verb forms is very limited. And apart from the simple vocabulary and structures, Esperanto was designed as culturally neutral.

  2. L. Zamenhof was a polyglot – he spoke more than ten languages, including French, English, Spanish, German and Russian. It looked like the easiest way was to choose one of them and make it a common language. L. Zamenhof, however, didn’t like that idea. He realized that the differences in the language structures and logical patterns were too big. Another reason against that decision was that choosing one language as an international one would put the speakers of all other languages at a great disadvantage.

  3. A Polish doctor Ludovic Zamenhof became famous due to the language Esperanto which he invented in the late 19th century. At that time Europe suffered from conflicts caused by the national and ethnic differences. L. Zamenhof dreamed of the tolerant world, free from wars. He believed that a common language could help promote understanding between people from different cultures and maintain peace.

  4. L. Zamenhof believed that it was very important to make the universal language easy to learn and speak. In 1887, he published a book about the structure and vocabulary of the new artificial language (which did not have any name yet). L. Zamenhof wrote the book under the pen name Doktoro Esperanto. People who started learning the new language referred to it by the name of its author – Esperanto, which translates as “one who hopes”.

  5. Today, Esperanto is still alive and is used in different parts of the globe. According to the research, people have different reasons for learning Esperanto. Some people take it as a challenge of learning a new skill. The others support Zamenhof’s idea of common peace which can be reached by means of a common language. There is an international community of Esperantists and the ability to speak Esperanto gives you access to this community.

  6. There have been a few other artificial languages in the world but Esperanto is still the most popular one. The number of Esperanto speakers is about two million people. Some of them know the language well enough to be called advanced users and some are just beginners. According to Zamenhof’s idea, Esperanto was supposed to become a universal second language for the people of different countries. L. Zamenhof never meant his language to replace any of the national language.

Dmitry Shparo

Dmitry Shparo is a famous Russian explorer, whose name is in the Guinness Book of World Records. He has walked across the Arctic, the North Pole and many other extreme places of the planet. Born in Moscow, Dmitry Shparo entered Moscow State University in 1956 to become a mathematician like his mother. While he was a student, he spent all his vacations doing hiking and cross-country skiing, especially in the Far North.

In 1970, Dmitry Shparo, together with his four friends, went on a hike along the Taimyr Peninsula in the north of Russia. They took a lot of pictures on the long hard trip. Their photos were published in the central newspaper. During a meeting with the journalists, the five travelers said: “We shall go to the North Pole!” However, it took them nine years to make their dream come true.

In March 1979, Dmitry Shparo and his team started the expedition to the North Pole. It was a challenging mission. They had to cope with the extreme cold and with the drifting ice that formed huge mountains in their way. In spite of the hardships, it took the brave travelers only two months to get to the North Pole.

Several years later, Dmitry Shparo decided to cross the Arctic to the North Pole. He planned to do it during the Arctic night, in total darkness. It was a dangerous and very hard expedition. The travelers had to cope with drifting, crashing ice and extremely cold temperatures. In spite of all these difficulties, in February 1986, Dmitry Shparo and his team got to the North Pole. The ‘Arctic Night’ journey appears in the Guinness Book of World rRecords.

In 1989, Dmitry Shparo and his Americal colleague, Paul Shurke, crossed the Bering Strait that separates Eurasia from America, on dog sleds. Later, in 1998, Shparo and his son, Matvey, were the first Europeans to ski across the Bering Strait, from Russia to North America.

That same year, Dmitry Shparo initiated another of his life’s projects. With the help of Canadian Paralympic athlete Rick Hansen he founded the Adventure Club to encourage disabled people to travel. Over the past 20 years the Adventure Club has arranged a lot of different events for disabled people to travel. Over the past 20 years the Adventure Club has arranged a lot of different events for disabled athletes and disadvantaged children all around the world. Under Shparo’s personal patronage, blind and deaf people and amputees have reached mountain peaks and crossed deserts, including the frozen ones.

Shparo’s sons, Matvey and Nikita, take an active role in the work of the club. In recent years, the Adventure Club has focused on youth programmes – for example, several youth ecological camps called Great Adventure were organized in Karelia. The club also arranges trips to the North Pole for children.

Dmitry Shparo has published several books about his journeys. The most famous books are: A way to the North, To the Pole! and Three Mysteries of the Arctic.

Задание 1.

Text A

We are happy to greet you in our library and hope you’ll be frequent guests here. The library is supplied with books in more than 50 languages. If you need a book in a Romance language – like French, Italian or Spanish – they are on the 1st and the 2nd floors. The Slavic languages. Like Russian, Bulgarian, Croatian, are on the second floor too, in the right wing of the building. If you go upstairs to the 3rd floor, you’ll find the Arabic and Chinese literature.

Text B

Hi, Bob. It’s Ted. I’m sorry, but it looks like I won’t be able to go to the stadium with you tomorrow. I’m going to be busy at the time of the football match – there’ll be a public lecture about black holes in the University at exactly the same time. Yes, I know that you consider me crazy to miss such a game and would tell me I should see a doctor, but the lecture is being delivered by one of the leading space researchers. He’s a celebrity in that sphere and I can’t miss it. See you later!

Text C

Ann: Hi Jim! What are you doing here, at the Medical centre?

Jim: Hi Ann! I’ve hurt my leg and I want to see the doctor.

Ann: Let me see. Looks terrible. It might be broken I’m afraid.

Jim: I hope not. But it really hurts.

Ann: Poor you! Did you have an accident?

Jim: Yes… sort of…

Ann: Mountain biking?

Jim: No. I gave up mountain biking a year ago.

Ann: I’m glad to hear it. It’s too dangerous. Football, then?

Jim: No, I don’t like playing team games. I go roller skating now. There’s a skate park not far from my house and I spend all my free time there.

Ann: Why can’t you find something… safer?

Jim: I’ll try. I promise. Sorry I have to go.

Text D

Rob: Hi, Mia! Are you busy tonight? I’ve got to talk to you and it’s important.

Mia: Sorry, Rob, but I need to be in the swimming pool by seven. It’s my regular session and I can’t skip it. Let’s talk tomorrow, at school. In the midday break?

Rob: Right, but I could meet you after your swimming class. I’ll see you home and we’ll talk on the way.

Mia: No, it’s not an option. It’ll be too late. And my mum will pick me up from the pool anyway, to drive me home. Can it really not wait till tomorrow?

Rob: It can, of course. Ok, I’ll be waiting for you in the school lobby then, near the canteen, in the midday break.

Mia; Fine.

Rob: Don’t be late!

Задание 2

Presenter: Good afternoon! Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about learning foreign languages. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.

Speaker A

I can speak four foreign languages: French, Spanish, Italian and Czech. I found out that if you want to speak fluently and confidently, you have to live for a while in a place where it’s spoken. For example, when I went to Spain, I didn’t understand anything. People spoke ten times faster than anyone had ever spoken in the classroom. However, in a few weeks I started to understand them and I was able to maintain a conversation.

Speaker B

It’s useful to speak foreign languages, but you can never learn all of them. That’s why it’s important to select the language of languages that are right for you and to focus on them. For me, Spanish is my first choice, because it’s widely spoken and will be useful for my career. Then comes Italian. I like the way it sounds and it’s relatively easy to learn. Chinese and Japanese are at the bottom of my list. They are so difficult that there’s no chance I’ll ever be able to speak them.

Speaker C

If you speak foreign languages, you can find a better job. Communication skills help to solve problems in business and everyday life. But few people understand that the process of language learning, in itself, is a very rewarding activity too. It keeps your brain active, develops your memory and broadens the horizons. It saves you from depression and helps you meet new friends. These are probably the reasons why some people start learning languages at a very mature age.

Speaker D

They say some people have a natural talent for languages, and some don’t. I, personally, don’t believe this. The reason why some people give up learning is usually because they find lessons difficult and tests stressful. But there are other ways to learn languages! When you want to watch a film, choose a film in the language you’re learning. Songs are great too. Find the text on the Internet, print it and sing it together with your favourite band. You’ll easily remember the new words.

Speaker E

Most people don’t feel very enthusiastic about learning languages when they don’t see how they can use them in real life. Nobody wants to learn rare exotic languages spoken by relatively small groups of people in remote places. English-speaking people are in the opposite situation – everywhere they go, people want to speak English with them. So there’s no reason to make an effort to learn something new.

Задание 3

Interviewer: Thank you for agreeing to participate in our survey.

Respondent: Oh, it’s OK. I’m waiting for our guide and our bus anyway.

Interviewer: You are a tourist then… Where are you from?

Respondent: From Poland. It’s in Eastern Europe.

Interviewer: Of course, I know where Poland is. I’ve even been there on an excursion.

Respondent: Welcome again. As for me, I’ve already been to 13 countries.

Interviewer: 13 countries sounds impressive.

Respondent: If I could, I’d travel all the year round! But it’s not possible.

Interviewer: Unfortunately, travelling takes lots of time and money.

Respondent: Exactly. I can’t leave my job for a long time.

Interviewer: What do you do for a living?

Respondent: I’m a dentist. This is a job you can’t do remotely. I sometimes envy my friend – she’s a programmer and works remotely. Another friend of mine is a yoga instructor and teaches yoga online.

Interviewer: But you can never pull out a tooth online!

Respondent: Exactly.

Interviewer: What do you like to do after work? Do you enjoy cooking or anything else?

Respondent: You know, I don’t like cooking very much, but my friends think that I’m very good at it. The secret is easy – I add cheese to all my simple dishes.

Interviewer: Do you?

Respondent: Yes. I love cheese and I think it’s one of the best inventions of humankind.

Interviewer: Do you add it to all dishes? Like potatoes and salads?

Respondent: I even make cheese soups. I don’t mind all sorts of fruit and vegetables of course, but they are the basis of my pet’s diet, not mine.

Interviewer: Your pet? Is it a rabbit or a mini-goat?

Respondent: No-no. She’s a tortoise. She lives behind the old broken piano nobody has ever played. People consider tortoises to be boring pets but they’re not. And surprisingly, she loves music!

Interviewer: Pardon?

Respondent: Yeah! I’ve just started learning to play the guitar and she encourages me. She listens when I practise and, for some reason, it helps me. I’ve made good progress and will start playing in amateur concert soon.

Interviewer: I think my sister should adopt a lizard to help her with her violin class. Nobody else agrees to listen to her.
